Yeah Yeah Yeah’s – Show Your Bones

Yeah Yeah Yeah'sBack in the days of the New Rock Revolution (tm. NME), a lot of attention was paid when Albert Hammond JR, guitarist in the white-hot Strokes, wore a badge, on a TV performance. It was the badge with the logo of a little known New York band simply known as the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. 2 EPs and their debut album later, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s were perched on top on the New York art punk scene. They had all the right elements; shy guitarist Nick Zinner created walls of sound by himself; classically trained Brian Chase gave the group a unique drumming style. But the ace was vocalist Karen O who usually looked like a My Little Pony doused in glitter and kitchen foil. After a mixed response to their debut album, the YYY’s took their sweet time about delivering a followup, but it’s here and it’s been worth the wait.

With a group that comprises of just vocals/guitars/drums, there didn’t appear to be a lot of scope for expansion. But Show Your Bones tells you it’s a different group right from the first track; “Gold Lion” has a straightforward beat and an acoustic guitar. It’s only Karen O’s distinctive vocals that reminded me of who I was listening to. “Way Out” continues the acoustic opening before “Fancy” obliterates all that’s gone before it, with an almost nu-metal heaviness. It’s a bit of a shock, but probably not as much of a shock as hearing Karen O sing the verse of “Phenomena” (yes, the LL Cool J one). “Dudley” is a good track that reminds me of the early Cure stuff.

Best track however is the current single “Turn Into”, it’s a song the album needs near the end as I think it kinda runs out of steam. But “Turn Into” is just such an upbeat song, almost joyous. It’s the standout track and maybe should have closed the album instead of the good-but not great, “Deja Vu”.
