MSTRKRFT – The Looks

The LooksA couple of months ago, the rather great Brazilian band CSS got everyone’s attention, with their first single “Let’s Make Love and Listen To Death From Above”. Now whilst it being a great song, it also managed the dubious feat of name checking another band and not sounding cheesy. Thing was Death From Above had split up just a few months before. Jesse Keeler and Sebastian Grainger had only recorded one album and a glut of remixes before splitting up. Oh well, it’s just as well that you never made such a big deal about having to add “1979” to the end of your name. Oh wait… you did.

Nevermind, at least Jesse can take some comfort in his new project MSTRKRFT (pronounced Mastercraft. Looks like he’s allergic to vowels in the same way Primal Scream were with XTRMNTR). The new duo (with producer Al-P), make a music that’s more in-line with electro, rather than Death From Above 1979’s energectic dance-rock. It’s all rather club-orientated stuff, but at the same time it’s probably the best dance album I’ve heard in a while. True, there’s not a great deal of variety, but the eight tracks all whistle by with bags of energy, so by the end I didn’t really care. The squelchy sounds and vocordered vocals of “Work On You” was something I’d not heard in a while, and therefore sounded really fresh. “Easy Love” starts with a great disco beat before going into more robotic vocals. It’s pretty similar to the first track, so maybe some re-sequencing should have been in order.

“She’s Good For Business” is the first track to have actual vocals, which makes it a rereshing change. “Neon Kinghts” is a much rougher sounding, techno track, “The Looks” uses the same squelchy electro sounds, but uses a stuttering beat to give it a different rhythm. To be honest, if you’re looking for variety then an album of electro tracks probably isn’t the place to be looking for it. But The Looks is probably one of the better dance albums I’ve heard in a while, it’s got great rhythms and should have you dancing a night away. If that’s your sort of thing.
