Peter, Bjorn & John – Writers Block

Peter, Bjorn and JohnThose Sweedes have a thing about catchy songs. Bands all the way from Abba to the Hives, Soundtrack Of Our Lives and the Concretes have all come up with wildly different music, but they’re recorded some killer singles. The Trio of Peter, Bjorn and John have joined in on their third album. The group have made an impact with the single “Young Folks” which has been a big Summer hit down here. They’ve made an undeniably stylised album, that does makes the usual guitar/bass/drums combo sound so much bigger than they really should. There’s also a great mix of sounds and musical styles on this album.

There’s the slightly off-kilter, distorted synth/hip-hop sounds of “Amsterdam”, the shimmering shoegazing “Object Of My Affection” or the stuttering but sunny “Paris 2004”. All of them have a distinctive sound but played back to back, the neatly flow into one another. The single “Young Folks” is something you’ll love: the off-tune whistling just gives it a hook that makes it instantly memorable.

It’s not all perfect; “the hazy distortion that coats “Starts To Melt” is grating and muffles the vocals. But aside from that, Writer’s Block is a really good album. Even when the lyrics deal with broken relationships and lost loves, it never sounds dull or self-absorbed.”Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off” is probably the best of these tracks, it’s 60’s pop vibe is strangely uplifting. All in all, a really great album that I’d urge you to check out.
