The Dears – Gang Of Losers

The DearsIt’s taken me a while to get round to last year’s album from the Dears. Considering that some of the songs of their previous album “No Cities Left” are bona fide favourites of mine. Their lush, melancholic songs struck a real chord with me (big surprise there). But Gang Of Losers is a departure in style. Despite only having their breakthrough album in 2004, the Dears have been recording since 1995. No Cities Left was such a bold album, that I think the band realised they needed to strip things down. The songs on Gang of Losers are more guitar-based and sound a lot more hopful.

Indeed the first song to really sound dark (like a supposed typical Dear track) is “Fear Makes The World Go Round” and even that ends with the hopeful “we’re all ok”.”Hate, The Love” is a towering song, symphonic without actually using an orchestra, “Whites Only Party” is a surreal, glam rock number with a big crunchy guitar riff. “Ballad Of Human Kindness” has a processed beat and such a lively “no one should have to live all of their life on their own”, it’s got so much happening that’s it’s hard not to love.

Ineed, the strange thing is lyrically the songs are upbeat too: “Ticket To Immortality” ends with the uplifting “the world is really gonna love you” refrain,  “Death Or Life We Want You” is surprisingly rough round the edges and has a pretty abrasive guitar line. As I mentioned before Gang Of Losers is a departure for the Dears, it’s less ornate than No Cities left but it means the quality of the songs shine through. And just like No Cities Left, I think this is an album that’s going to grow on me the more I listen to it.
