Flaming Lips – At War With The Mystics

Flaming LipsThe Flaming Lips have never been ones to shirk away from the big issues in life. Their two previous albums (The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots) dealt with mortality and how fleeting it is. But both albums never sounded bleak or depressing; instead they both celebrated life and made it an upbeat experience. So with At War With The Mystics being dubbed the band’s “political album” how are they going to marry their off-kilter sense of humour with the big issues of the day. It’s simple really, just meld the band’s full bodied sound with more guitars and let rip.

The “Yeah Yeah Yeah Song” questions what you would do with ultimate power, but couples it with Muppet-esque choruses. “Free Radicals” sounds like a Midnite Vultures-era Beck track, with it’s funky guitar and high pitched vocals. “Sound Of Failure” takes digs at teen-pop starlets but tries to sympathise with them at the same time. “It Overtakes Me” changes from a heavy track into a lush acoustic daydream.

The whole album seems quite psychedelic, the guitars are all mixed to the fore and the drums and vocals are drenched in echo for most of the tracks. “The Wizard Turns On” is very Pink Floyd, the big drum sound and blip bloop electronics are quite retro. If I’m honest, I’m going to need to listen to At War With The Mystics More to get into it; the other Lips albums revealed themselves over repeated listens, so it wouldn’t surprise me if I “get” this album further down the tracks.
