Iggy Pop – Lust For Life

Lust For LifeTrainspotting must’ve done a world of good for Iggy Pop. During the 90’s, his track “Lust For Life” became an anthem due to it’s part in probably one of the best British films ever. It’s a great song that still sounds brilliant even though it’s from probably Iggy’s best solo album Lust For Life, which is 30 years old now. In fact, I can’t listen to Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” and not think that they’re totally ripping Iggy off. Back in the mid-70’s, David Bowie produced a handful of albums for Iggy, giving his career a leg up after the collapse of the Stooges, just as he did with Lou Reed earlier in the decade after he left the Velvet Underground.

It’s impossible not to hear Bowie’s influence on this album; he produced it as well as co-writing most of the tracks and playing keyboards on all of them. You can hear his influence on a track like “Some Weird Sin”, and you can just plain hear him on the chorus of “the Passenger”. The jokey “Success” is pretty funny towards the end when the lyrics just go mental “I’m gonna hop like a frog…./ oh shit!”.

In fact the only bum track on the album is “Fall In Love With Me” which just goes on a for a bit too long, didn’t really have to run for six and a half minutes. But that’s just a minor quibble, Lust For Life is just great; the songwriting is bang on and the songs are really strong. It’s one of those catch 22 things though; this album along with “The Idiot” (also from 1977), were produced to David Bowie and frankly Iggy never came close to making another album as good as these. That doesn’t diminish what he achieved with the Stooges but, just as with Primal Scream, you kinda wonder who the main creative force was.
