Interpol – Antics

InterpolRead earlier on today that one of my favourite bands, Interpol, are releasing their third album soon. I say favourite band, but what I mean to say is that they’ve recorded one of my most loved albums, their debut Turn On The Bright Lights. It was a dark and atmospheric album with just really affecting songs on it. The first 5 tracks are just the best start to an album I think. Interpol were rightly hyped after this album and again we’ve got a second album that’s regarded as a sophomore slump. Antics came out in 2004 and didn’t grab me the way TOTBL did a few years earlier. Did I fall into the trap of wanting more of the same?

I probably couldn’t be blamed, after hearing the upbeat, almost jaunty first track “Next Exit”. It was a fairly sizable change in sound, despite the fact it wasn’t exactly happy-happy-clap-clap upbeat, it wasn’t the attractive gloominess that I fell in love with on the first album. “Slow Hands” delivers a fast, direct injection into the album but is really not indicative of the album as a whole. “Not Even Jail” sounds great as it has an anthemic feel to it that is really appealing.

The band are still sound great, Sam Fogarino is one of my favourite drummers and the bass of Carlos Dengler is more prominent, which creates a dub sound on some of the tracks. I’m doing something that I loathe, comparing two albums whereas I should just take this album on it’s own merit. Maybe it’s the more full-bodied sound, but there’s something different about this album that just doesn’t click with me. It’s got good singles, but as an album it just doesn’t hold up unfortunately.
