Buffalo Springfield – Again

Buffalo SpringfieldBuffalo Springfield, like their fellow 60’s contempories The Byrds, weren’t together for long but they had a big impact on the following decade and on music in general. Thought they only stayed together for 2 years, they released 3 albums in that time that combined their roots in folk music with rock ‘n roll, country and orchestral works. One of the more striking thing about the album is how different the tracks sound, which is probably down to the group’s three songwriters, Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay.

The rockin’ “Mr Soul” has a surprisingly abrasive guitar solo in the middle which still sounds great. “Bluebird” has a great sounding, psychedelic middle part, which ends up being a banjo stumming melody. “Broken Arrow” must’ve pushed the boundaries at the time; less than a minute into the song it switches from a rock ‘n roll number to a lush, folk song with ragtime piano, stops and starts, tempo changes and swooning strings at the end.
My favourite track is the achingly beautiful “Expecting To Fly” (as heard in Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas). The out of focus orchestration sounds amazing and the closing strings are just heartbreaking. Buffalo Springfield would split, but Neil Young and Stephen Stills would collaborate on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young albums and their own wonderful solo work. But Buffalo Springfield’s albums still sound wonderfully fresh and beautifully put together.
