Arctic Monkeys – Favourite Worst Nightmare

Arctic MonkeysArctic Monkeys need another glowing review like Paris Hilton needs another fucking tiny dog in a bag. The group have critical acclaim to spare, and they’d really need to fuck it up to change that. As one of the few people who don’t have their debut album, it’s going to easy to judge this album on it’s own merits, rather than comparing it to it’s massively selling predecessor.

It’s a breathless opening sequence of tracks, from the thundering “Brianstorm”, to the sneering “Teddy Picker”. The lyrics are spot on, rich with detail and flow nicely through the songs. “Do Me A Favour” starts off fairly melancholy before kicking up a gear and “maybe fuck off/would be too kind” is a brilliant lyric. The best thing about these songs is that the never descend into the verse/chorus/verse chorus standard. Every song has a new twist, and the first time I listened to them, I really didn’t know what was coming.

Like a lot of albums, I’m drawn to the slower, quieter tracks: here’s it’s “Only Ones Who Know”, a bittersweet snapshot of a break-up. It’s another short song in an album that never overstays it’s welcome, only two song are over 4 minutes and half are under 3 minutes. Favourite Worst Nightmare has converted me to the Monkeys, whereas before I was still sceptical of the hype. Plus any band that can do a guitar line that sounds like the Knight-Rider theme is worth a listen.
