LCD Soundsystem – Sound Of Silver

LCD SounsytemIt was only two years ago that James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) got around to realizing his debut album. After producing some seminal music at the start of the century, people got really excited about his group’s debut single “Losing My Edge”, a hipster’s lament at his fading coolness and relevance. The thing was it just doubled Murphy’s coolness: he went onto produce influential indie/dance tracks by the Rapture and Radio 4. A bunch of great singles just whet people’s appetite for a full album. Then it came, a self-titled double album, which only included all the greatly acclaimed singles on a bonus CD. So now, just two years later a new LCD Soundsytem album is upon us.

The first LCD Soundsystem album felt like a rushed debut, with some great moments but rough around the edges sonically speaking. Sound Of Silver is much more rounded and polished, but retains some of the frantic energy of the earlier material. There’s also a sense of cataloguing the influences and highlights of dance culture. Only it’s not shit. A track like “Someone Great” sounds like a forlorn love song, but it’s accompanied by some techno sounds that wouldn’t sound out of place on a late 80’s acid house track.

“Watch The Tapes” sounds like a no-wave guitar song, complete with shouty lyrics. The album’s title track again, starts off with a pounding disco beat before entering a calm piano-led phase. Indeed the first two tracks seem to reference James Murphy’s disco punk roots, especially “Get Innocuous!” which starts off with a beat that sounds suspiciously like “Losing My Edge”. In the end, my favourite is “All My Friends” a Krautrock stormer that builds in intensity, but pack’s a defiant lyrical punch.
