The Besnard Lakes – The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse

Besnard LakesThe indie rock scene in Canada has been fawned over for quite some time. It’s spawned the likes of Broken Social Scene, Stars, Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Feist and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Most of these bands are based in Montreal which may explain the really unique style of music they all produce. Elegant and stately but not afriad to rock out, the Besnard Lakes fit into the Canadian mould pretty well. Led by a husband and wife duo, plus many more helping out, The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse

“Devastation” is monumental, combining epic space rock like Spiritualized and The Earlies with some beautiful choral vocals. “Cedric’s War” is a chirpy song that maybe Belle And Sebastian could’ve wrote. “For Agent 13” uses space in between the sounds to create a really special atmosphere until it’s crescendo ending. “Because Tonight” combines the male and female vocals really well, to make a track that just has some memorable moments.

Just like 23 by Blonde Redead, the thing that’s going to put most people off this album are the vocals. They’re treated like an instrument giving the songs texture, but if you’re looking for clear and meaningful lyrics you’ll probably need to look elsewhere. Imagine the Beach Boys on smack and you’ll get a rough idea about the sound of this album: the vocals are double and triple tracked to create this amazing echoing effect.. There’s a dreamy, hazzy pop album here. It’s just going to take me and you a few more listens to it, before we can really hear it.
