DVD of 2007: Sigur Ros – Heima

The director of Lilo & Stich making a film about Iceland’s post rock giants Sigur Ros? Seems unlikely, but they’ve teamed up to make the best music DVD of the year, if not one of the best of all time. The film shows the band touring around their native country playing a series of free shows from the capital to small isolated townships, sometimes even playing songs in the middle of nowhere. The epic majesty of the songs is matched by the stunning, but bleak Icelandic landscapes. Now it all makes sense, the sheer panoramic beauty of Sigur Ros’s music comes from this amazing landscape and the two are virtually intertwined. The band are shy in interviews but really it’s all about the sounds and images. The 5.1 surround sound mix is sublime and the live versions of the song pack a real emotional punch. Even if you’re not a fan of the band, you should get this DVD as it will sway you to their amazing music.
