Hot Chip – Made In The Dark

Hot ChipHot Chip are an odd little band: they look like the nerdiest, whitest guys this side of Ween, yet their music owes more to the slick sounds of Prince and Pharell Williams than any “white” band. Their combination of bleepy-electro noises and some great songs saw their previous, The Warning, nominated for the Mercury Music prize. For me the Warning had some great songs on it, but had a few that were totally skippable. So I was hoping for something a bit more consistent this time round.

Just like the band’s last album, there’s a mish mash of styles that the band carry off with varying degrees of success. The album starts of strong with the punchy electro of “Shake A Fist” and “Out At The Pictures”. The current single “Ready For The Floor” is probably the best thing here, with it’s stuttering vocals, warm harmonies and warbling synth sounds. “One Pure Thought” and “Touch Too Much” benefit from having a simpler vocal approach and a distinctive sound. The title track itself is a slow and sad piano ballad that doesn’t have the spark of the tracks.

Unfortunately Made In The Dark does lag towards the end. “The Privacy Of Our Love” and “Whistle For Will” show off Alexis Taylor’s delicate vocals, but don’t really do much musically. It looks like Hot Chip could well emulate their pop and hip hop influences, in recording some great singles (I’m betting “Shake A Fist” and “One Pure Thought” will be the next singles), but patchy albums. It’s a shame, but the band’s constant work flow (this is their third album in three years) should come up trumps soon.

  1. Man, I love Ready for the Floor. It’s playing on constant loop with A&E and some other stuff on my iPhone. The video is pure class. I love the whole art-school thing and the totally geeky lead singer.

  2. Yeah, it’s the best thing on the album by far. The other potential singles on the album are all really good, so get ready for those too.
